7 Quick Takes Friday

As you have probably seen already from the posts that I did I have been in a knitting mood for several weeks now. I am working on two knitting projects right now, though the hat I am working on is on hold at the moment because I started making a pair of leg warmers this past Saturday as a present. The yarn I'm using for the leg warmers is fall colors :) When they are finished I am making sure that I take pictures of them before they are wrapped up and given away.
To continue on with the subject of knitting I have decided to make an afghan as well. The story behind that will be in number 3 of this week's quick takes. Instead of getting yarn from the store to make it I am reusing the yarn from this blanket/afghan that I made a couple years ago but never used:
I spent part of Sunday afternoon and evening pulling out the seams and since the yarn that I used to sew the squares together was still in good shape I will be including that as well :) But I won't start making this until my two current knitting projects are done, especially since I need to use the circular needles for this. You can find that pattern that I will be using here.
On Friday evening Amanda and I had gone to a young adult group that we try to go to every week. Afterwards we usually go to the McDonalds that's right by the church that we meet at. Since Yavi was at a friend's birthday party Amanda had to go pick her up afterwards, and while we waited Amanda and I sat in McDonald's for a while talking with a couple friends that we hadn't seen in a while. After sitting there talking for a little bit we decided to go walk around Wal-Mart together for a while since Amanda was still waiting to pick up Yavi and she didn't want to sit in McD anymore. So while we where walking around Wal-Mart we wandered over to the craft section and were looking at the yarn and sewing section and Amanda said that a couple of the yarns looked really nice together and would look nice as an afghan which gave me the idea for the one I am planning on making. (See #2) We also ran into two other friends while at Wal-Mart and we talked with them for a while. Of course we had to take a group photo, though I took three tries to get everyone in the picture :)
Besides taking apart the seams in the blanket I'm going to be reusing it was also apple sauce making day in my family with apples from our trees :D My dad had picked around 50 pounds of apples the day before for us to use and we only used around 21 pounds, but a dessert with apples was included in that. Amanda wrote about it on her blog so you can go over to her blog and read it :)
Amanda, Yavi, my mother and I watched the Decoy Bride Sunday evening. It was pretty funny, not to mention they had Scottish accents and David Tennant was in it :) Even if it wasn't intentional there was a Doctor Who reference in the movie :D You can find the summary for the movie on IMDB :)

Close-Fitting Fingerless Gloves


Last week Rosalind reminded me that a friend of ours had a birthday coming up so I decided to make her a present. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of my project before wrapping it. Since our friend's favorite colors are pink and blue I was able to buy a skein of yarn with those colors in it and I started looking for patterns for fingerless gloves since its starting to get chilly out now and the only pattern that I found and that I liked was the pattern for close-fitting fingerless gloves. My mom said that they could easily be turned into mittens as well. You can find pictures that follow along with the pattern here, if you need to jog your memory in case you don't remember a step. There are a couple steps that I didn't use but that you can find on the website. Even though I don't have a picture of the finished product you can see what the yarn that I used looks like here.

you will need the following supplies:

1 pair size 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles.  (Size 8 will also work)
1 skein Worsted Weight yarn, any color.
1 tapestry needle

To start the first glove, grab one of your knitting needles and cast on 24 stitches if you have a smaller hand, or 28 stitches for an average to large woman's hand/medium men's hand.  Be sure to include the slip knot as the first stitch, so that there are 24/28 and not 25/29 stitches.
**Knit one stitch. Purl one stitch. Repeat from ** all the way across to complete the row.
Repeat Step 3 three more times.
Row 5 - Knit all the way across.
Row 6 - Purl all the way across.

Rows 7-27: Repeat rows 5 and 6, ending will a row of knit.
Row 28: Purl all the way across. At the end of the row, cast on 5 stitches.
Row 29: Knit all the way across. At the end of the row, cast on 5 stitches . 
Row 30 - Purl all the way across.

Row 31 - Knit all the way across.

Row 32 - Purl all the way across.

Row 33 - Knit all the way across.
Row 34 - Cast off the first five stitches. Purl all the way across.
Row 35 - Cast off the first five stitches. Knit all the way across.
Row 36: Cast off one stitch. Purl all the way across.

Row 37: Cast off one stitch. Knit all the way across.

Row 38: Repeat Row 36.

Row 39: Repeat Row 37.

Row 40: Purl all the way across.
Row 41: **Knit one stitch. Purl one stitch. Repeat from ** all the way across to complete the row.
Repeat row 41 eleven more times. Bind off and sew the sides together.

7 Quick Takes Friday - Fall Edition

On Saturday TJ had another soccer game. The weather was in the upper 60's and lower 70's all day which was nice and there was a breeze as well, it was a nice difference from the 80/90 degree weather that we'd had for his game the week before. TJ got a goal, though I didn't get a picture of it, even though I had my camera with me. Since one set of grandparents came to his game we went out to Stake N' Shake for lunch after that game.
Even though TJ isn't in the picture below I had to share it because of how it turned out. For the photography class I'm taking we have to practice using our cameras in manual. Which I did for this photo and I used the lens of Amanda's clop on sunglasses over the camera lens and this is what happened. I like how there is still color in it as well as a speia like tone.

This week the weather has stayed pretty much in the 70's, with three days in the lower 80's! It has been a nice change from the hot weather that we have been having lately. It also means that fall is here and that we can start having hot chocolate, tea and pumpkin in a lot of stuff. I have already made and apple and pear crisp, using apples and pears from the trees in our yard. Hopefully I can make more yummy stuff at some point. Especially with pumpkin in it.
On Sunday while on Pinterest I stumbled across a link with 20 fall recipes. As I was scrolling through the recipes that Abby, the blogger over at i heart nap time, I found two recipes that sound yummy and that I would like to try :)
This is a sneak peak at what some of the recipes look like
The first recipe that I found and wanted to try is Apple Pie Pull-Apart Bread. Here is the recipe.
Ingredients
  • 1 tube of Pillsbury Biscuits {I used Grands Flaky Layers}
  • 1 medium apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • cinnamon - sugar {1/3 cup of sugar mixed with 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp nutmeg}

Instructions
  • Line a bread pan with parchment
  • Pre-heat the oven to 350
  • Toss the apple slices in the cinnamon sugar and set aside
  • Slice each biscuit in half - creating 16 rounds
  • coat each round with the cinnamon and sugar
  • layer the biscuits alternating with the apple slices {begin and end with biscuit} in the bread pan
  • Bake for 20 - 25 minutes

The second recipe I found is for Caramel Apple Muffins, which sounds yummy.

Caramel Apple Muffins
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Yield: 12
Moist and soft apple muffins with a delicious caramel drizzle on top. Fall flavors, perfect for breakfast!
Ingredients
  • 1 stick (113g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1/4 cup vegetable/sunflower oil
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 and 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 and 1/2tsp baking powder
  • 1/4tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 cups, chopped and peeled apple (I used Granny Smith)
  • 1/3 cup caramel sauce/syrup for drizzling (I used Hershey's)
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F and grease a 12 hole muffin tin (I use Wilton Bake Easy spray).
  2. Place the melted butter, oil, buttermilk, vanilla extract and beaten eggs into a jug and mix together until combined.
  3. Place the flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarb and chopped apple into a large bowl and mix together just until everything is incorporated and the apples are covered in flour.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until just combined. Do not be tempted to over mix, this will result in rubbery muffins.
  5. Fill each muffin hole level (this was a heaping 2tbsp ice cream scoop for me.)
  6. Place muffins in the oven for 20-25 minutes until risen, golden and an inserted skewer into the centre comes out clean.
  7. Leave to cool in the tin for at least 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Whilst the muffins are still warm, drizzle the caramel sauce/syrup over the top of the muffins so it will soak into them.
  8. Leave to cool on the wire rack completely before storing in an airtight container.
  9. Muffins will keep for 2-3 days at room temperature.

Spiral Socks Pattern


I posted the pattern for these socks last month but I decided to share them again since I just finished making the socks myself. The name of the book that I got the pattern from is Kids Knitting: Projects  For Kids of All Ages by Melanie Falick. So here is the pattern as well as a picture of the socks that I made :)



Materials needed:
  • Approximately 285 yards worsted eight yarn, such as Classic Elite Tapestry (this is enough for 1 pair of child or adult sized socks)
  • 4 size 6 double pointed needles
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle


For the body of the sock:

  1. Cast on 42 stitches on 1 of the double-pointed needles (14 stitches per needles) and place a marker between the last and second to last stitch on the third needle.
  2. Start the first round by knitting the first cast-on stitch with the fourth needle, pulling tightly on the yarn coming from the third needle so that you do not end up with a large gap where the stitches from 1 needle meet the stitches from the next needle. Work in a knit 3, purl 3 rib for 12 rounds. Or if you are having trouble joining the stitches so that you can knit in the round, cast on 42 stitches and work back and forth in the knit 3, purl 3 rib for about 12 rounds, then divide the stitches onto the 3 double-pointed needles. It should be easier to join the stitches now that you have a few inches of knitted fabric to hold.
  3. Begin the spiral pattern by knitting the first 2 stitches. Next, increase 1 stitch by knitting into the third stitch twice. Purl 2. From this point on, work in a knit 3, purl 3 rib until the sock measures approximately 12 1/2 inches. If you are making striped sock, change colors at the beginning of the round. In the last row, decrease by knitting 2 stitches together once at any point. You will now have 42 stitches divided among 3 needles.
For the toe
4. Round 1: Knit 4, decrease 1 by knitting 2 stitches together. Repeat all the way around. When you finish the round, you will have 35 stitches divided on the 3 needles.
Round 2: Knit all the way around
Round 3: Knit 3, decrease 1 by knitting 2 stitches together. Repeat all the way around. When you finish the round, you will have 28 stitches divided on the 3 needles
Round 4: Knit all the way around.
Round 5: Knit 2, decrease 1 by knitting 2 stitches together. Repeat all the way around. When you finish the round, you will have 21 stitches divided on the 3 needles.
Round 6: Knit all the way around.
Round 7: Knit 1, decrease 1 by knitting 2 stitches together. Repeat all the way around. When you finish the round, you will have 14 stitches divided on the 3 needles.
Round 8: Repeat all the way around.
Round 9: Decrease by knitting 2 stitches together all the way around. When you finish the round, you will have 7 stitches divided on 3 needles.

5. Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread the tail onto the yarn needle and draw it through the remaining 7 stitches to close the sock. Bring the tail to the inside of the sock and wave in the end. If you started your sock by knitting back and forth, sew up the open seam at the top. Then repeat all directions to make a second sock.

Turkey Sloppy Joes


Here is this week's Monday Meal as I just started calling these :) Even though the recipe calls for Turkey we have used beef as well :) This recipe has been used by my family for a while and it is a very easy meal to make if you need something easy to make for dinner :)


  • 2 pounds ground turkey breast (or beef)
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 6 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper


In a nonstick skillet, cook the turkey(beef) and onion for 5 minutes or until turkey(or beef) is no longer pink. Add the next 7 ingredients; simmer for 10 minutes, sitting occasionally. Serve on buns.

Since I come from a large family we always double the amounts so I am going to include the doubled amounts for you.

For three pounds of meat:

  • 3 pounds turkey/beef
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 9 tablespoons barbecue sauce (1/2 cup + 1 tbl)
  • 3 tablespoons mustard (1/4 cup)
  • 3 tablespoons vinegar (1/4 cup)
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper


And you just follow the same instructions from the original recipe :)

7 Quick Takes Friday

On the 9th I started the photography class that I mentioned before. It felt a bit overwhelming but I think I'll manage it :) The book we are using for the class is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson (the 3rd edition). Each week we go through a different section/chapter of the book. This week was "Defining Exposure." I will try to keep you up dated each week :)
This is what the weather where I live has been like all week. Though I am glad that it got cooler today :)


Just recently two friends of ours came out with a cook book. Here is the name of the book:

"The Twins' Guide to Gluten-Free Baking: 25 Quick and Easy Recipes for Busy Bakers" [Kindle Edition].

This past Saturday was my mom's birthday. Since Pope Francis had asked for a day of prayer and fasting on the 7th we had to celebrate my mom's birthday on Sunday as well, though we just had the cake and sang to my mom on Sunday. We gave her a Despicable Me t-shirt as well as Despicable Me and we watched it Sunday night :)

I am planning on doing this in November because of the 50th anniversary!

Allspice Crumb Muffins


Last week Amanda found this muffin recipe on the Brown Eyed Backer and decided to make them and they were amazing so I decided to share the recipe here with you :)

ALLSPICE CRUMB MUFFINS

yield: Makes 12 muffins
 
prep time: 20 minutes
 
cook time: 20 minutes
 
total time: 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

For the Streusel:
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup light brown sugar
½ teaspoon ground allspice
5 Tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into bits
For the Muffins:
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup light brown sugar
1 stick (8 Tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
2 large eggs
¾ cup whole milk
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:

1. Center a rack in the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Butter or spray the 12 molds in a regular-size muffin pan or line with paper cups. Place the muffin pan on a baking sheet.
2. To make the streusel, put the flour, brown sugar, and allspice in a small bowl and whisk to combine. Add the bits of cold butter and toss, pinching the mixture between your fingers, until you have pea-sized crumbs. Set aside in the refrigerator. (The streusel can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored, covered, in the refrigerator.)
3. To make the muffins, in a large bowl whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, allspice, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the brown sugar, making certain there are no lumps. In a large glass measuring cup or another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, eggs, milk and vanilla extract until well combined. Pour the liquid ingredients over the dry ingredients and with the whisk or a rubber spatula, gently but quickly stir to blend. The batter will be lumpy; that is how it should be.
4. Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups. Sprinkle streusel over each muffin, then use your fingertips to gently press the crumbs into the batter.
5. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden and a thin knife inserted into the center of the muffins comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and cool for 5 minutes before carefully removing each muffin. Cool completely on the wire rack. Muffins can be stored, in an airtight container, at room temperature for up to 5 days.

7 Quick Takes

This past weekend, since it was Labor day weekend, my family and I went up to the lake house that my one set of grandparents owns. We had a nice time up there, though for a lot of the traveling to get up there we got a lot of run, though the weather was nice after that while we were up there. Though I didn't go, everyone else went tubing a couple times.

 Here is the sock that I finished knitting already. I am working on the second sock right now :) The only difference is that the top of the sock is black and burgundy instead of purple and I am replacing one of the  sections with a camo yarn that I used for the toe on this one :) Once the second sock is finished I'll post a picture of both socks together.

On Monday I start a four week photography class that is happening at the community college near my house. Though it is only on Mondays it sounds like fun and I shall have to keep you updated on that :)

I found this on Monday evening on Pinterest after getting back from our weekend and, though I wasn't a huge fan of Catching Fire, I thought that the above poster was cool and that fans would like it :)

I found this ^^^^ on Pinterest the other day and it kind of just blew my mind away. And as my sister Yavi said not to long ago, "The Reichnbeck Falls" episode is told from John's point of view.
Since I fell like blowing peoples minds away with Sherlock related things that I find on Pinterest here is something else to think about :)
